Ifno pls, first time tractor purchase to keep 6 level acres clean. I'm constantly reading/hearing that Yanmars are good tractors. Looking at a 1984 YM1700 w/923 hrs, has 48" BH (which is practically new). Unit op's ok has fresh paint and clean fluids. They're asking $4950 for this tractor & hog. This price seems a bit high to me, or am I being too critical??? Can anybody out there give me a little spec info on a YM1700? One other question for all those Yanmar experts out there. I rarely see any posts on the Ym1700, can anybody tell me why? Seriously, the remark about the "experts" was just a yank on the leg. Would really appreciate any and all help.....Dean, a.k.a. 1. I would do some serious checking around. IE the Yanmar Tractor Owners Group.
I would say you probably could get a YM 1700 and a brand new bush hog (4 ft) and a WHOLE lot less money. Check it out. I have a YM2000 and very happy with it.Also according to info available, the YM 1700 would be a 1975 to 1977. They were not made in 84. Get educated before you buy. Depending where you are located, there are several good sources in the club. I am in Indiana and deal with Lowes. ....

This does seem like a lot of Money to me too. I have a '81 YM 155 that I'm hoping to get $3500 for, and it only has 700 hrs. IMHO Yanmar makes them as good as anyone else, some of their ideas are superior to other manufactors some, not so good. I think being objective, you find this with any brand, it just depend on what items are important to you. ....

The YM1700 was built from 1975-1977. The price is high. I sell grey markets as a sideline business and I would sell one with a new rotary cutter for about $3800. ....

You don't hear much about the 1700 because those older 2wd compact tractors are not nearly so popular as the 4wd. There is not a thing in the world wrong with the older 1500 and 1700s, but it helps if they are priced relative to the rest of the market. The one you are looking at is definitely at the high end..... And for the money you can buy much more tractor today. Those particular models of Yanmar were never sold new in the US, so they don't have that popularity either. By the way, they were mid 1970s models, not 1984.
Although you rarely see a 1700 priced that high, it wouldn't be hard to get that kind of money into any used Compact tractor. How does it start, run, and shift. Are the tires, brakes, clutch near new? Manuals? No oil or water leaks I hope... Nice paint job? Decals? A certain give-away as to how the owner approached repairs is if the wiring harness was taken off before painting or just painted along with everything else. Personally, when the wiring harness is painted I just walk away. I've been a mechanic too many years not to recognize what that means.............Roger L.

I want to say thanks to all of those good people that replied to my post. These message boards are a geart help to all who read and reply to those asking for help or opinion. It looks like that ole boy was tryin to get off into my pocket. I'll be looking elsewhere for a tractor.
Some folks say that good people are hard to find these days. Well, all's I can say is I didn't have any trouble find-in some good ones.
